sometimes when I’m not looking
I see the outline of a memory
the shape, the weight,
a pattern I recognise
and by this mark
I know
you were here
when the substance has gone
an imprint remains

Hi Claire, thank you, yours words describe beautifully for me memories of someone who has now passed through this life.

Claire,
Your writing is lovely. The imagery, the rhythms, and word choice all complement each other.
Are you familiar with “averted vision?” It is a technique to look at stars in the evening sky, where you look at the stars in your peripheral vision rather than directly at them, and by doing so, have a clearer view of them.
I suspect there might be a metaphor there.

no – I haven’t heard of “averted vision” – but I think that is a perfect fit – I’ll be keen to investigate
